The club holds a regular monthly meet at our hut in Capel Curig, a great base for walks/scrambling or climbs in the heart of Snowdonia.

Weather permitted Chris plans on this weekend to do a challenging circular walk from the Hut on Saturday 7th August, a chance to pit yourself against the GMC pioneers as this is the route of the famous Guide Dogs for the Blind sponsored walk, first done in 1978. It is a very full day out crossing Moel Siabod, the wilds of Ysgafell Wen, Moel Druman and Allt Fawr, across the Crimea Pass and over Moel Penanmen and down to Dolwyddelan and back to the Hut. It’s possible to break out from Bwylch y Rhediad and return to base via Dolwyddelan, but even that is a fair step.

At one time there was an inn at the summit of the pass, called the "Prince Llewellyn Inn" but it was popularly known as "the Crimea", because of its reputation for fights. The inn closed in 1881 because the police opposed the renewal of its licence and the justices thought that there was no need for the Inn when the railway to Ffestiniog was completed.

The outline for this walk is on page 23 of the Gwydyr book by John Huxley.

Very much in the spirit of the early GMC pioneers it appears not to follow paths for much of the route but mostly council boundaries so do not expect a well marked route. We will carry all food and drink that we need for the day, ie it is unsupported.

Plotting the route it measures 32k (20 miles) with about 1800m (6000ft) ascent but the distance will no doubt be greater on the day due to avoidance of bogs etc.

So, full mountain kit will be required (carry warm clothing and waterproofs no matter what the forecast says) - gaiters recommended.

The walk will take about 10 hours so it will start at 8am latest. I will finilise a start time nearer the date and when I know who is attending.
