Saturday Meet 1st August 2026 - Cyrn y Brain circuit from Horseshoe Pass
(log in to member's area for restricted information such as mobile numbers)
This is a circuit of about 7 miles from the Horseshoe Pass taking in part of the Offa's Dyke Path, and the summit of Cyrn y Brain (1,852'). Plus the ruins of Sir Watkins's Tower, that have links to the history of Jacobitism, the early days of the Romantic era in the arts, and what we know as 'Classical Music' appreciation in the UK.
If the weather is good there are great all round views of the Welsh and English hills.
The walk is mainly on good footpaths with a short section on a very quiet road, and two short sections that are boggy and rough-going.
Arrangements for the day
I'm looking forward to seeing you on 1st! Please meet at the informal car park on the A542 at the head of the Horseshoe Pass, on the opposite side of the road to the Ponderosa Cafe, ready for a 9.30 am start. The GR for the cafe is 193481 and the postcode LL20 8DR.
Please note the earlier than usual start - I've put this in the plan because the actual Ponderosa cafe and its car park are, I understand, still closed and that may well put pressure on parking locally.
If the above car park is full there is more on-road car parking on the minor road that leaves the A542 to the right (i.e. to the west), just north of the pass summit, and goes west towards the quarries. My mobile for the day is 07307 613432.
Please let me know by email or text if you are coming, and conversely if you decide to pull out. Please in doing so (a) let me have your mobile number for the day and (b) let me know if you would like or can offer a lift; and if so where you are starting from/need picking up from.
To help car sharing, from July 25th I will list in the members only section any the car share needs and offers - I will then leave it to interested parties to contact each other and sort themselves out.
